Air Source Heat Pumps work a bit like a fridge in reverse. They take the warmth in the outside air and boost it to a higher temperature using a compressor. This heat is then transferred to the heating system in your home. Heat pumps work very effectively even when the outside temperature is well below zero. Although the heat pump requires electricity to run, it uses less than it produces, typically producing between 3kWh and 4kWh for every 1kWh used.
Providing that your home is well insulated, air-source heat pumps make a cost-effective replacement for storage heaters, and oil or LPG central heating systems. They work extremely well with underfloor heating, as they provide a lower heat than a typical oil or gas boiler.
A heat pump can also be used with radiators, but if you already have a conventional central heating system you may need to replace these with larger more efficient ones. A big advantage is that the heat is at a constant, comfortable level and no radiator will get too hot to touch. Ideal for small children or vulnerable adults.
A heat pump is typically paired with a pressurised hot water tank. You can also add solar hot water to these systems to make them even more cost-effective.
